No Day But Today
In 2009, the award-winning California Youth Conservatory Theatre (CYC), well known for staging San Diego’s finest and most ambitious young-adult theatre productions, had the prestigious distinction of being the first youth theatre group in the world to present the brilliant and controversial hit musical RENT in its full-score form. Inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme, the modern-day rock opera tells the story of a collection of struggling artists and musicians trying to survive and practice their craft in the avant-garde neighborhood of New York’s Lower East Side. This incredible production was directed by CYC Artistic Director Shaun T. Evans with the help of the acclaimed actress/playwrite Karole Foreman and Broadway veteran Rodney Hicks (from the original Broadway cast of RENT). Now, in 2012, this remarkable group is remounting RENT at the Lyceum Theatre.
Set against the backdrop of height of the AIDS crisis, the provocative story confronts mature issues such as homelessness, drug addiction, illness and LBGT life. This production, faithful to the traditions and intent of the original creation, is performed by some of the very best young performers San Diego County has to offer. Fans of this timeless show will love CYC's rendition of Jonathan Larson's masterpiece.
Standouts from the award-winning score include: “Seasons of Love,” “I Should Tell You”, “I’ll Cover You”, “Take Me or Leave Me” and “Santa Fe”. The melodies lift and move audiences and echo meaningful messages about how precious life and love are for everyone.
