LITVAKdance presents "Reimagining Suffrage and other stories, recounted"

Showing:   April 26, 2020
Where: Lyceum Stage

On the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, LITVAKdance performs works by four female choreographers from vastly different backgrounds and histories. Each work takes a unique look at women's themes that transgress time and place. Choreographers include 28-year old Trinidadian-born Tamisha Guy (She|Her|Hers) who is currently a member of the renowned NYC-based company A.I.M., 83-year old SDSU dance professor emeritus and master of satire Patricia Sandback (Girls with Balls), and 43-year old Sadie Weinberg, Artistic Director of LITVAKdance. For her suite, titled Reimagining Suffrage, Sadie collaborated with her mother, San Diego dance pioneer Betzi Roe.

Reimaging Suffrage and other stories was originally performed in the spring of 2019 at the Sunshine Brooks Theater in Oceanside, CA to much acclaim. For this encore production at the Lyceum, LITVAKdance has asked each of the choreographers to revisit their dances and delve more deeply into what it means to be a woman in the year 2020. Also new to this production, Mojalet Dance Collective will share a segment of their new work, Mr. President, inspired by the women's march that overshadowed the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson in 1913 and choreographed by Mojalet artistic director, Faith Jensen-Ismay.
